There are four big reasons that relationships fail and marriages fail. 95% of relationship failure and breakdown can be traced to one of these four causes. Relationships that are healthy and strong and last long term have certain characteristics and behaviors of the two partners that failed relationships and marriages do not. Here are the four big reasons relationships fail and how to avoid them.
- One reason relationships and marriages fail is one or both partners do not have their own hobbies that they pursue and enjoy outside the relationship. The net result of this is consciously or unconsciously the partner without their own hobbies or interests outside the relationship has an expectation that all their needs will or should be met by their partner. This is an unrealistic expectation and there is no partner in the world in a relationship or marriage that can possibly fulfill this need .
- Another big reason relationships and marriages fail is one or both parties involved in the relationship are too young. It is a proven fact that the older two people are in a relationship or marriage the greater the likelihood of success. This is not to suggest that you shouldn’t date or marry if you are young but more a word of encouragement that if you recently had a failed relationship or marriage the next one is more likely to work out than the previous one.
- A huge reason relationships and marriages don’t work out is if the relationship moved too fast. It is hard to resist the allure of a relationship that is on fire with passion that moves at record speed. And although approaching relationships in this manner is more exciting they are likely to burn out. That is because the passion and sense of sexual attraction blinds each of the parties to a more objective view of that person and the likelihood of the relationship working long term. If you want a relationship or marriage to work for the long haul take it slow and easy one day at a time. If you’re living together before knowing each other at least six months you are probably moving too fast.
- This one is probably the biggest reason for failed marriages and relationships and that is a lack of effective communication. Which is not surprising at all since they do not teach this skill one bit in our education system and schools. However this skill is essential for the long-term survival of a marriage or relationship.
